Biographical Information

Jeff Urlaub has been a minor league pitcher.

Amateur Career

Urlaub was 18-8 in high school, hitting .485 as a senior as well. He was picked by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 26th round of the 2005 amateur draft, one round after they took Clayton Mortensen. Urlaub went on to college and had a 5-3, 4.82 record as a freshman; one of his wins was over 2005 first-round draft pick Brad Lincoln. In 2006, he allowed seven hits and three runs in two innings. He transferred to UNLV and missed a year due to injury, then gave up six hits and three runs in three innings in 2008. The Florida Marlins still chose him in the 47th round of the 2008 amateur draft. He was back with UNLV in 2009 and struggled some more (5-6, 6.88, .352 opponent average). Transferring again, he spent a year at Grand Canyon University. The Oakland Athletics then selected him in the 30th round of the 2010 amateur draft, behind scout Jeremy Schied.

Minors

Urlaub was 1-0 with two saves and a 2.39 ERA for the 2010 AZL Athletics, striking out 26 in 26 1/3 IP. In 2011, he was with the Burlington Bees (1-2, 3.93, 23 K in 18 1/3 IP) and Vermont Lake Monsters (3-1, 5 Sv, 1.67, 49 K, 4 BB in 37 2/3 IP). In '12, he pitched for the Bees (5-4, 3 Sv, 2.60, .78 WHIP) and Stockton Ports (2-2, 3.86 in 21 G). He was 4th in the A's system in pitching appearances.

Jeff next was with the Israeli national team for the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In his lone game, he appeared versus Spain in the finale, with a spot in the 2013 World Baseball Classic on the line. He relieved Eric Berger with a 3-2 lead, the bases loaded and one out in the 4th. He allowed a run-scoring single to Engel Beltre to tie it, then Paco Figueroa ground in the go-ahead run before Urlaub intentionally walked Rafael Alvarez. David Colvin relieved at that point; Israel went on to a 9-7 loss.
