Biographical Information

Jackie Sullivan was a second baseman 15 years (1940-1955), all in the minors except for a cup of coffee in 1944, losing one year to the Military and most of two others. Sullivan was born on Friday, February 22, 1918, in Princeton, TX. He broke into Organized Baseball in 1940 at age 22 with Longview in the East Texas League. He played for Longview (1940); Pensacola in the Southeastern League (1941); and Dallas in the Texas League (1942). He served in the U.S. Armed Forces (1942-1944)(BN).

Sullivan was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 6, 1944, with the Detroit Tigers. He played at second base in one game for the Tigers with one at bat and a putout. He was optioned to the Buffalo Bisons of the International League (1944) and the Little Rock Travelers of the Southern Association (1945) and on August 29, 1945, he was released by the Tigers.

He returned to the minors with Dallas (1946); Lubbock in the West Texas-New Mexico League (1946-1950); Shreveport in the Texas League (1951); Gainesville in the Big State League (1951); Odessa in the Longhorn League (1951); Abilene - Lamesa in the West Texas-New Mexico League (1952); and Plainview in the West Texas-New Mexico League (1953-1955); ending his baseball playing career at age 37.

In 1948, his best year in the minors, he had 25 home runs and 134 RBI at .381. Overall in the minors, he had 128 home runs and 877 RBI.

He served as player-manager in the minor leagues, starting with Lubbock in 1947, and continuing until he was replaced by Jodie Beeler in mid-1955, when he became a McKinney, TX policeman. He was also a Dallas County TX deputy sheriff for a year. He died at age 74 at Humana Hospital in Dallas, TX from complications of heart disease on October 15, 1992 and is buried at Ridgeview Memorial Park in McKinney, TX.
