Biographical Information[edit]
Hung-Chun Yen played in the CPBL and for the Chinese Taipei national baseball team.
Yen was drafted by the Lamigo Monkeys in the 11th round of the 2015 CPBL Draft, and he spent his first two seasons in the minor league.[1] He hit .282/.378/.329 as a backup of catchers Shih-Hao Liu and Hao-Jan Huang in 2017, and he also appeared in the 2017 Taiwan Series. Yen was 2-for-11 with a RBI single against the CTBC Brothers, and helped the Monkeys sweep the Brothers. He then represented Taiwan in the 2017 Asia Professional Baseball Championship. Yen was 1-for-3, with a double off Gi-yeong Im against South Korea, and he also threw Hyun Jung out at second in the 3rd inning. However, he was 0-for-2 against Japan, and Shuta Tonosaki, Shogo Nakamura and Yota Kyoda all collected a steal off him in the 5th inning. Taiwan won Bronze in the event.[2]
The Pingtung native still didn't get many chances since Liu shined, and he hit .306/.358/.371 in 33 games. He was 0-for-1 in the 2018 Taiwan Series, and won his second Taiwan Series title as the Monkeys beat the Uni-President Lions in 5 games. When prospect Chien-Fu Liao broke out in 2019, Yen lost his spot and he stayed in the minors for the entire season. He only hit .269/.328/.327 in 2020, and he slumped to .241/.297/.354 in 2021.
Since Liao suffered a hip injury, Yen got more chances in the next two seasons, but his batting lines fell to .234/.270/.340 in 2022 and .183/.275/.268 in 2023. Yen played well in the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series, hitting .273/.333/.636 with a clutch 2-run homer off Ruei-Yang Gu Lin to help the Monkeys beat the Lions and advance to the 2023 Taiwan Series. However, he was only 2-for-19 against the Wei Chuan Dragons, and the Monkeys lost to the Dragons in 7 games.[3]
