Biographical Information[edit]
Gi-yeong Im has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team.
Im was the second-round pick of the Hanwha Eagles in 2012, after Joo-suk Ha in round one. [1] He pitched 2/3 of a shutout inning as a rookie in 2012. In 2013, he was 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA then he fell to 1-1, 6.75 in 2014. He spent 2015-2016 with the Sangmu Phoenix military team to fulfill his mandatory military service. [2]
The sidearm hurler returned to the KBO in 2017, now with the KIA Tigers. He had gone to them as compensation for Eun-beom Song leaving the team as a free agent. He went 8-6, 3.65, walking only 18 in 118 1/3 IP. Had he qualified, he would have been 8th in the KBO in ERA. He placed a nice role when they won the 2017 Korean Series, shutting out the defending champion Doosan Bears for 5 2/3 IP while whiffing six. [3] He fell to 8-9, 6.26 in 2018.
Despite his rough '18 campaign, he made the South Korean squad for the 2018 Asian Games and helped them to Gold. He closed out a 15-0, 5-inning mercy rule rout of host Indonesia, relieving Won-tae Choi and striking out Andospa Aldo Saputra and Jerry Rachman before a single by Diva Reza Fabil. Riski Moehammad Adjhari flew out to end the inning. He then got the start against China and got the win with a solid outing (6 1/3 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 R); Woo-ram Jung took over in the 7th with the shutout intact but let an inherited runner score. For the Games, Im was 6th in ERA, between Sheng-Feng Wu and Inayat Ullah Khan. [4]
