Biographical Information[edit]

Rui-Yang Gu Lin has pitched in the CPBL [1]

Gu Lin represented Taiwan in the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup. The Uni-President Lions drafted him in the first round of the 2018 CPBL draft.[2] He suffered from a right shoulder injury, and had his CPBL debut on September 27, 2019. He pitched 5 innings, struck out 6 and allowed 2 runs. That's the only game he pitched with the big club. The talented right hander suffered a right oblique injury in 2020, and he only had 3 appearances in that season. The Lions named him as their opening day starter in 2021, and he pitched well in his first entire season in the CPBL. He was 8-6 with a 3.15 ERA, and collected 106 strikeouts. He didn't make it onto Lions' 2020 Taiwan Series roster because he reached his limit (100 innings) the team set for that season. Gu Lin was 7-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 2022, and attended the All-Star Game for the first time in his career. However, he suffered a right shoulder injury on August 17, and missed the rest of the season.

The Taichung native was on Taiwan's 24-man roster for the 2023 Asian Games. He pitched 2 shutout innings against South Korea, then he struck out 5 in 2 shutout innings against China. South Korea beat Taiwan in the Gold Medal game. [3] Gu Lin ended up 5-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 2023, and he was named the starter of the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series Game 3. However, he allowed 4 runs in 3 innings, and Jen-Ho Tseng got the win over him to help the Monkeys eliminate the Lions. Gu Lin was on Taiwan's roster for the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship, and he started against Japan. He brought a perfect game into the 6th inning, but Shota Morishita then crushed a game-winning, 2-run shot, and he lost to Haruka Nemoto. Taiwan beat Australia in the Bronze Medal game.

Gu Lin had one of the most dominant seasons by a local pitcher in 2024. He was selected into the 2024 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was named the starter of Game 1. Gu Lin struck out Po-Jung Wang and Yu-Chieh Kao in 2 shutout innings, and he got the win over Tzu-Peng Huang. He ended up 10-2 with a 1.66 ERA and 150 strikeouts, and he won the ERA title. His 1.66 ERA was the second-lowest in CPBL history; only Jen-Wen Hsiao had ever had a lower ERA than he did. He was 3rd in wins (4 behind Mario Sanchez) and 3rd in strikeouts (between Nivaldo Rodriguez and Tyler Eppler). He pitched 7 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts in 2024 CPBL Playoff Series Game 1, and the Lions took revenge on the Monkeys. Gu Lin started against the CTBC Brothers in the 2024 Taiwan Series Game 1, but he left the mound in the 4th inning due to back injury. The Lions lost to the Brothers in 5 games. He was named the CPBL MVP. [4]

His repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 97.5 mph, a curve and a changeup [5]
