Biographical Information[edit]

Jen-Wen Hsiao pitched for the Taiwanese national team and in the CPBL.

Hsiao represented Taiwan and won Bronze in the 1993 Asian Championship. He was also on Taiwan's roster for the Universiade. The Brother Elephants signed Hsiao in 1998, and he soon became a important part of the Brothers' bullpen since he had a 4.91 ERA in 12 games as a rookie. Hsiao pitched 35 games with a 3.90 ERA in 1999, and recorded a 3.42 ERA in 55 1/3 innings pitched in 2000. 2001 was the career year for Hsiao. He collected a career-high 16 saves (2nd in the league, 4 behind Chao-Huang Lin) and lowered his ERA into 1.40. This is the CPBL all-time single season ERA record (as of 2023). Hsiao also participated in the All-Star Game for the first time in his career in this season. The closer of the Brothers didn't pitched well in the next year. Although he still grabbed 11 saves, his ERA rose to 4.26, and the closer spot was taken by Ching-Li Wang in 2003. Hsiao never repeated the amazing pitching of 2001 but he was still a reliable mid-inning reliever in his remaining career. He had a 3.64 ERA within 54 1/3 innings in 2004, and a 5.04 ERA in 34 games played in the next year. 33-year-old Hsiao only played 24 more games in the next two years, and retired after the 2006 season. After retiring, Hsiao became a college coach, coached Chung Yuan Christian University in 2014 and I-Shou University from 2016 to 2020. When the TSG Hawks was founded in 2023, they signed Hsiao and he served as their pitching coach.

Hsiao's repertoire included a fastball, curveball, sinker, slider and forkball. He is a sidearm pitcher.

Overall, Hsiao was 19-19 with a 3.60 ERA, 38 saves and pitched 517 innings in ten seasons in the CPBL.
