Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Henry (Hank) Manning played minor league ball from 1991 to 1996, peaking at AAA. He later was a minor league manager and college coach.

Manning hit .373 as a freshman in college and .385 in 1988. He played for the Brewster Whitecaps in 1988 and Chatham A's in 1989. Undrafted, he tried out with several teams, signing with the Chicago White Sox. He bounced around his first season, 1991, with stops for the Erie Sailors (7 for 44, 2B, 2 BB), South Bend White Sox (.284/.314/.328 in 23 G) and Sarasota White Sox (2 for 24). In 1992, he hit .282/.339/.338 as the starting catcher for South Bend and fielded .991. He was less effective in 1993 with Sarasota (.228/.307/.266 in 27 G) and the Birmingham Barons (.179/.223/.283 in 30 G).

In 1994, Manning appeared for the Prince William Cannons (.257/.278/.362 in 31 G) and Nashville Sounds (.283/.320/.348 in 21 G). In 1995, he was 9 for 30 with a walk, double and 2 homers for Birmingham. He also batted .284/.299/.527 for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the independent Northern League, homering 19 times in 85 games. He was third in the league in homers behind Pete Kuld and Terry Lee and was named the All-Star catcher. Back with Winnipeg in 1996, he fell to .264/.303/.378 with 7 HR.

He then managed the Johnstown Steal in 1997 and was assistant GM/coach for the New Jersey Jackals. He went 2 for 5 for New Jersey in 1998, his last action as a player. He finished his minor league career with a .259 average and .382 slugging percentage.

He returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for two years, then took over the head job in 2001. He was 219-275-2 after ten seasons.
