Biographical Information

Pitcher Henry Mack was selected in the 13th round of the 1976 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 41-43 in six seasons in the minor leagues. He led his league in walks four times.

Mack debuted in 1976 with the Auburn Phillies, going just 2-9 with a 7.33 ERA. He led the New York-Penn League in both losses and walks, issuing 67 free passes in 54 innings. His 10 wild pitches tied Bradley Meagher for the lead in that category.

In 1977, Henry was with the Spartanburg Phillies. He was 5-10 with a 5.23 ERA and again had control problems, leading the Western Carolinas League in wild pitches (17) and walks (112) in 141 innings of work. Mack improved drastically in 1978. He was 15-4 with a 2.79 ERA for the Peninsula Pilots, struck out 158 and allowed 102 hits in 158 innings. He did walk 118. His control was bad enough that he lost a no-hitter by a 3-2 score to the Lynchburg Mets. He was 7th in the Carolina League in ERA and tied Marty Bystrom for the lead in victories. He was second in strikeouts, one behind Bystrom. He did not lead the league in walks.

On February 23, 1979 Mack was traded by the Phillies with Jerry Martin, Derek Botelho, Barry Foote, and Ted Sizemore to the Chicago Cubs for Manny Trillo, Dave Rader, and Greg Gross.

Mack spent his last three years with the Midland Cubs. He was 10-4 in 1979 with a 4.94 ERA and walked 116 in 144 IP, leading the Texas League in free passes. In 1980, Henry fell to 5-11, 6.26 for Midland. He walked 142 in 142 IP and allowed 176 hits. He gave up 17 home runs, tying three others for the TL lead. He led in walks and runs allowed (125).

In 20 games in 1981, Henry was 4-5 with two saves and a 4.24 ERA. He walked 54 in 68 innings.
