Biographical Information

Utility player Hector Ortega played professionally from 1989 to 1992 and from 1995 to 1997. He began his pro career in the Montreal Expos system at 16 years old.

After a brief debut in 1989, he stole 20, 14 and 28 bases from 1990 to 1992, respectively. He didn't play in 1993 or 1994, but returned to hit .301/.355/.410 with 8 home runs, 76 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 137 games for the Stockton Ports of the Milwaukee Brewers system in 1995. He led the California League in games that year and was second in at-bats (539, behind Adam Riggs' 542) and hits (162, behind Riggs' 196). In 1996, he reached Triple-A for the first and only time in his career, hitting .556/556/.667 with 10 hits in 18 at-bats for the New Orleans Zephyrs. He spent most of the season at Double-A. After a year in independent ball with the Saskatoon Smokin' Guns in 1997, his career was over.

Overall, Ortega hit .270/.331/.363 with 21 home runs, 249 RBI and 105 steals in 594 games over seven seasons.

He later became a scout for the Chicago Cubs, signing Jhonny Bethencourt, Robinson Chirinos, Danis Correa, Marwin Gonzalez, Jose Guevara, Angel Guzman, Fabián Pertuz, Carlos Rojas, Jhon Romero, Larry Suarez and Gleyber Torres.
