Biographical Information

Gregorio Petit was signed by scout Julio Franco for the Oakland A's in July 2001. He made his pro debut with the DSL Athletics West the next summer.

Petit went 2 for 3 in his major league debut for the Oakland Athletics on May 18, 2008 and then picked up a hit in each of his team's next three games while filling in for an injured Mark Ellis. A shortstop in the minors, Petit was used at second base in place of regular back-up Donnie Murphy as manager Bob Geren wanted to capitalize on Petit's hot bat at the time the A's were struggling. He ended going 8 for 23 (.348) in 14 games. He came back to play 11 games in the majors the next season, in 2009, when he hit .226 for Oakland.

After this first taste of the big leagues, Petit went back to the minors over the next few seasons. He changed organizations a few times, playing in the Texas Rangers system in 2010. He did not play in the United States in 2011, but in 2012, he was back in AAA with the Columbus Clippers, the top affiliate of the Cleveland Indians where he hit .260 in 111 games. In 2013, he moved to the Tucson Padres, where he hit .292 in 134 games, and he followed that with another solid season as he hit .297 in 85 games for the Oklahoma City 89ers in the Houston Astros' system. This time, he was able to return to the major leagues following his long absence from the Show, joining the parent Astros on July 25, 2014. He stayed there for the rest of the season, getting into 37 games where he hit .278 with 8 doubles and his first two big league homers.

On April 1, 2015, the Astros traded him to the New York Yankees for future considerations as he had been unable to make Houston's opening day roster in spite of hitting .320 that spring.

Petit was scheduled to be the manager of the Corpus Christi Hooks in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19 then did manage Corpus Christi in 2021-2022.
