Biographical Information[edit]
Enzo Sawayama has pitched for the Brazilian national team.
He was the second-youngest member of Brazil's staff in the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers (Sulivan Ribeiro was younger) and the only player on the team born in Japan, though several had played in Japan and/or were of Japanese descent. He led the team in ERA while only Oscar Nakaoshi made more appearances; Sawayama pitched in two of Brazil's four games. He closed out their 4-1 win over Nicaragua; relieving Igor Januário in the 8th with one on, no outs and a 4-1 lead, he retired Melvin Novoa, struck out Steven Leyton, walked Milkar Perez and got Elmer Reyes to hit into a force. In the 9th, he went 1-2-3 against former major leaguer Cheslor Cuthbert, Luis Montealto (K) and Sandy Bermudez (K) to save Felipe Sales' win. In the finale, a 3-1 loss to Nicaragua, he again worked the final two innings. Replacing Nakaoshi with a man on second in the 8th, he retired Bermudez on a comebacker, walked Edgard Montiel, struck out Montealto and got Leyton to pop up. In the ninth, he again went 1-2-3, this time against Benjamín Alegría, Cuthbert (K) and Reyes. Only Heitor Tokar and Sales struck out more batters for Brazil. [1]
