Biographical Information[edit]

The son of big leaguer Robby Thompson, second baseman Drew Thompson played in the pros as well.

He hit .418 as a high school senior. was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the second round of the 2005 amateur draft (the 80th total pick, compensation for the loss of Henry Blanco to free agency; he signed for a $475,000 bonus. The scout was Buddy Bell) and made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Twins. He hit .257/.385/.367 with 22 walks in 35 games for that club and also was 4 for 13 with a double and a walk for the Fort Myers Miracle. Baseball America rated him as the 17th-best prospect in the Gulf Coast League, between Jordan Schafer and Jeff Lyman. In 2006, he batted .261/.321/.382 with 7 triples for the Beloit Snappers; one of his infield mates was fellow second-generation player Toby Gardenhire. He tied Sean Shoffit and Mike Baxter for 6th in the Midwest League in three-baggers.

He ended up missing the entire 2007 and 2008 seasons with a stress fracture in his back. Back with Beloit in 2009, he hit .242/.325/.364 with 8 triples (again tied for 6th in the MWL). With Fort Myers in 2010, he produced at a .203/.286/.307 with nearly as many errors (15) as RBI (22) in his 78 games. He ended his career in the Chicago White Sox organization in 2011, going 8 for 23 with 3 doubles, a homer, 4 walks, 9 runs and 7 RBI in 7 games for the Bristol White Sox. Overall, he had hit .242/.324/.360 in 289 games in the minors with 143 runs and 104 RBI. He had 7 triples, 118 walks and 235 strikeouts while fielding .957 at 2B.

In addition to his father, a Thompson's brother Logan Thompson played minor league ball and his brother Tyler Thompson has been drafted twice.
