Biographicall Information[edit]
The son of big leaguer Robby Thompson, outfielder Tyler Thompson was born in California but grew up in Jupiter, Florida.
He hit .443 and slugged .639 as a high school junior then batted .463 as a senior, winning All-Conference. Baseball America listed him as one of the top 100 high school prospects. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 42nd round of the 2008 amateur draft but did not sign, opting to attend the University of Florida instead. Mostly a bench player, he hit .235 as a freshman. As a sophomore, he improved to .301 as a semi-regular in left field. He was 2 for 5 in the 2009 College World Series. The next year, he fell to .264 as a bench player again. In game one of the 2011 College World Series finals, he came up big, scoring Florida's lone run in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to the eventual champion University of South Carolina. Following his junior year, he was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 46th round of the 2011 amateur draft. He chose to remain in school but suffered an ACL tear the following year, missing most of the season after a .319 start in 16 games.
He never did play professional baseball.
In addition to his father, Thompson's brother Drew Thompson and his twin Logan Thompson played in the minors.
