Biographical Information[edit]
Dong-soo Shin pitched in the KBO for 13 years.
Shin was drafted by the Haitai Tigers in the first round of the 1986 KBO draft, and he had a 8.53 ERA in 9 games in his first season. He went 5-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 1987, then he was 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 1988. Shin had a 9-5 record with a 3.41 ERA in 1989, and he led the league with 17 homers allowed. He went 5-8 with a 4.09 ERA in 1990, and he improved to 14-7 with a 2.45 ERA in 1991. He was 5th in ERA (between Myung-won Jeong and Dong-hee Park) and 7th in wins (tied with Park). He also set the KBO record for pitching most innings without a hit-by-pitch (176 2/3), and he held it until Hyeon-jong Yang broke it in 2017.
The Gwangju native went 13-9 with a 4.46 ERA in 1992, and he was 10th in wins (tied with Bong-ok Oh, Tae-il Lee and Jung-hyun Park). He pitched 17 games with a 4.38 ERA in 1993, and he was traded with Dae-hwa Han, Bong-jae Kim and Moon-hui Heo to the LG Twins for Byeong-hun Lee and Sang-hun Kim. Shin's ERA was 5.59 in 11 games in 1994, then he pitched 22 games with a 1.86 ERA in 1995. He recorded a 3.73 ERA in 46 appearances in 1996, and he had a 2.19 ERA in 29 games in 1997.
Shin went to the OB Bears in 1998, but he surrendered 4 runs in an inning then he retired. He was a minor league coach of the Tigers from 2001 to 2005, and he became an assistant coach for Seoul High School in 2006 and Gwangju Dongsung High School from 2007 to 2009. He coached Gwangju Dongsung from 2010 to 2011, and he became the pitching coach for the Tigers in 2013 and for their minor league team from 2014 to 2018. He was an assistant coach for Youngsun High School in 2019, and he jumped to Sekwang High School in 2020.
Overall, Shin was 55-39 with a 3.51 ERA, struck out 467 and pitched 958 1/3 innings in 13 seasons in the KBO.
