Biographical Information[edit]

Darrell Thompson made it to AAA at age 29 then pitched for Team USA the next year.

Thompson was 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA as a college freshman then improved to 10-2, 2.40 as a sophomore. He led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in wins and strikeouts, winning OPAC Pitcher of the Year. [1] His junior year, he was 7-1 with a 2.26 ERA. He had a 6-2, 3.76 record his senior campaign.

Turning pro with the independent Roswell Invaders, he was 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in the summer of 2016. In '17, he pitched for Roswell (7-1, 5.86, 73 K in 63 IP) and Gary SouthShore RailCats (1.69 ERA in 2 G). He tied for third in the Pecos League in wins and was 6th in strikeouts. Moving to the Schaumburg Boomers for 2018, he was 5-2 with a save and a 3.79 ERA in a newfound relief role, striking out 45 in 35 2/3 IP. Back with the Boomers in 2019, he was 4-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 43 games, posting a .97 WHIP and striking out 62 in 45 1/3 innings. He tied Connor Eller for 10th in the Frontier League in appearances.

When the Frontier League did not operate in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was back with Schaumburg in '21 and was 2-0 with fives and a 3.86 ERA. He also pitched three shutout innings for the Long Island Ducks. He was 2-1 with 17 saves, a 1.43 ERA, .91 WHIP and 92 K in 50 1/3 IP for the 2022 Boomers. He tied Nick Horvath for 3rd in the league in games pitched and tied Kevin Escorcia for 4th in saves.

A late bloomer, he got his first taste of the affiliated minors shortly before his 29th birthday. Signed by the Milwaukee Brewers, he split the summer between the Biloxi Shuckers (1-1, Sv, 0.68 ERA, 20 K in 13 1/3 IP) and the Nashville Sounds (4-3, 5.12, 57 K in 45 2/3 IP). He tied Clayton Andrews for 3rd in the Brewers system with 48 appearances. Back with the Sounds for 2024, he was 2-1 with a save and a 2.57 ERA in 15 games. After the Brewers put him on the development list, preventing him from pitching but keeping him under team control, he asked to be released and the Brewers granted his wish. [2]

Suiting up for the US in the 2024 Premier 12, he made four appearances for the 3rd-place finishers. In their opener against Puerto Rico, he relieved Rich Hill in the 4th inning of a scoreless game. He struck out Carlos Cortés and Shawn Ross then got Juan Centeno on a fly. In the 5th, he again went 1-2-3, versus Jaime Ferrer, Ezequiel Pagán and Yadiel Rivera. Sam Benschoter took over in the 6th. His other three outings did not go as well, as he allowed 7 runs in 2 innings combined. He took the loss to Chihiro Sumida of Japan. He tied Po-Ching Chen and Takahisa Hayakawa for 5th in the event in runs allowed and tied Andrés Santiago, Liván Moinelo and Hayakawa for 3rd in earned runs. [3]
