Biographical Information[edit]
Chun-Yu Huang played and coached in the CPBL and played for the Taiwanese national team.
He won Silver in the 1986 World Junior Championship and played in the 1987 World Junior Championship as well. [1] He later played for Taiwan in the 1993 Asian Championship, winning Bronze. [2] When the Chinatrust Whales formed in 1997, he was the starting catcher in their first game. He had a record 20-pitch at-bat against Rafael Montalvo that season. [3] He hit .236/.297/.351 and fielded .986 that year, throwing out 39% of those who tried to steal.
Huang batted .261/.309/.307 in the 1998 CPBL and threw out 33% of would-be base-thieves. He fell to .198/.279/.259 in 1999 and fielded .975 [4] In Game 1 of the 1999 Taiwan Series, he was involved in a brawl between the Whales and the Wei Chuan Dragons after Carlos Sievers elbowed him in retaliation for an earlier incident. [5] He finished the Series 0-for-15, setting a Taiwan Series record for most at-bats without a hit. The old mark of 12 had been shared by Wen-Sheng Lu and Chun-Liang Wang. [6]
He hit .203/.264/.280 for the Whales in 2000 and threw out 32%. He coached for the Whales from 2001-2003 then coached at Kainan University and Tsinghua University. [7]
Overall, Huang hit .230/.291/.309 with 61 runs, 9 homers and 64 RBI in 715 plate appearances over 277 games in 4 seasons in the CPBL.
