Chris Bayer pitched for four seasons in the minors, three of them with periods at AA.
Bayer was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 11th round of the 1985 amateur draft. He went 1-5 with a 3.35 ERA that year for the Elmira Pioneers. In the off-season, Boston dealt him with Bob Ojeda, Tom McCarthy and John Mitchell to the New York Mets for Wes Gardner, Calvin Schiraldi, John Christensen and La Schelle Tarver.
Bayer bounced around in 1986, winning 16 games between the Columbia Mets (9-1, 2.52), Lynchburg Mets (7-3, 2.78) and Jackson Mets (7 R in 4 1/3 IP). He was four wins shy of Blaise Ilsley, the minor league leader; coincidentally, he shared his birthdate with Ilsley. In 1987, Chris suffered a reversal of fortune with Lynchburg (4-10, 5.76) and Jackson (0-3, 8.27). He ended his career in 1988 with the St. Lucie Mets (3-7, 4.70) and Jackson (0-2, 8.74).
Bayer was 24-31 with a 4.36 ERA for his career, having gotten 2/3 of his wins in his one big year.
