Biographical Information[edit]

Chang-ho Choi pitched in the KBO for 15 years.

Choi was drafted by the Chungbo Pintos in the 2nd round of the 1987 KBO draft, and he had a 7.56 ERA in 8 games in his first season. He only pitched 3 games in 1988 (the team was now known as the Taepyungyang Dolphins), then he went 10-14 with a 2.22 ERA in 1989. Choi was 3rd in ERA (between Jung-hyun Park and Myung-won Jeong), 2nd in strikeouts (7 behind Dong-yeol Sun) and 2nd in losses (1 behind Cheong-soo Kim). Choi was 9-9 with a 3.20 ERA in 1990, and he was 3rd in strikeouts (between Kang-chul Lee and Dong-hee Park). He extended his solid pitching in 1991, and he had a 15-11 record with a 2.93 ERA. He led the league in innings, hits and homers allowed, and he ranked 3rd in strikeouts (47 behind Sun) and 5th in wins (tied with Lee).

The Miryang native went 3-9 with a 3.87 ERA in 1992, then he had a 7-12 record with a 2.99 ERA in 1993. He slumped to 12-11 with a 4.09 ERA in 1994, then he struggled in 1995 as his ERA was 7.24 in 8 appearances. Choi was 8-9 with a 3.85 ERA in 1996 (the team became the Hyundai Unicorns this year), then he pitched 48 games with a 5.24 ERA and a 7-10 record. Hyundai then traded him to the LG Twins for Jong-ho Park, and his ERA was 3.13 in 63 games between the two teams in 1998. He was 4th in appearances, between Hyun-wook Kim and Pil-jung Jin. Choi allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning in the 1998 Korean Series, and the Unicorns beat the Twins in 6 games.

Choi slumped to a 5.81 ERA in 50 games in 1998, then his ERA was 10.61 in 28 games in 1999. He recorded a 5.86 ERA in 54 games in 2000, then he announced his retirement after the 2001 season. He was an assistant coach for Kyeongbuk High School from 2003 to 2006, for Sungkyunkwan University from 2008 to 2009 and for Daejeon High School from 2009 to 2010. He became a minor league coach for the Nexen Heroes from 2011 to 2013, and he the minor league pitching coach for the SK Wyverns from 2014 to 2019. He became their pitching coach in 2020, then he was named the assistant coach for Jemulpo High School in 2022.

Overall, Choi was 77-94 with a 3.66 ERA, struck out 1,048 and pitched 1,490 2/3 innings in 15 seasons in the KBO. As of 2024, he was tied with Se-woong Park for 32th in strikeouts in KBO history.
