Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Casey Sadler made the majors in 2014.

Sadler was 10-1 with a 3.12 ERA as a sophomore in college in 2010. He was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 25th round of the that year's amateur draft, one round after Justin Howard. The scout was Mike Leuzinger.

In his rookie professional season, 2010, Sadler was 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 12 games (1 start) for the State College Spikes. He was 5-5 with 4 saves, a 1.02 WHIP and a 2.43 ERA in 35 relief appearances for the West Virginia Power in 2011 and in 2012, he was 4-6 with 2 saves and a 3.73 ERA in 32 games (17 starts) for the Bradenton Marauders, being converted from relief to starting mid-season. In 2013, he was 11-7 with a 3.31 ERA in 23 games for the Altoona Curve. He also pitched a single game for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. He missed time after being hit by a line drive by José Ramírez. He tied Nik Turley, Mike Wright and Keith Couch for 4th in the Eastern League in wins and was 5th in ERA (between Warwick Saupold and Couch) but only fanned 72 in 136 1/3 IP. Among Pirates farmhands, he was first in wins. Pittsburgh added him to their 40-man roster that offseason as he would have been eligible for the Rule V Draft but he was not considered a serious candidate for the 25-man roster.

Sadler started 2014 hot for Indianapolis (3-0, 1.67 ERA, .85 WHIP in 4 G); with Pittsburgh's starters going through a stretch of short outings, he was called up to give the bullpen another arm capable of going longer distances. In his big league debut on May 3rd, he relieved in the 7th inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, with a 5-3 deficit. He retired Melky Cabrera on a fly, ex-Pirate Jose Bautista on a grounder, walked Edwin Encarnacion and got Juan Francisco to line out. In the 8th, he allowed a leadoff single to Brett Lawrie but fanned Colby Rasmus, retired Josh Thole on a grounder and struck out Chris Getz (with a wild pitch advancing Lawrie to third) for a second shutout inning. Josh Harrison batted for him in the bottom of the 8th. Pittsburgh rallied for a 6-5 win. When long reliever Stolmy Pimentel went on the DL shortly thereafter, it seemingly helped Sadler's shot at remaining on the team. He had pitched only more game (another 2-inning scoreless stint) before being sent back down, though, when Jeff Locke came off the DL.
