Biographical Information[edit]

Warwick Saupold reached the majors in 2016.

Saupold pitched for Australia in the 2008 World Junior Championship. He was 3-2 with a 5.52 ERA for the Perth Heat in the 2010-2011 Australian Baseball League. In the 2011-2012 Australian Baseball League, he excelled for the Heat, going 5-3 with a 1.41 ERA. He led the Australian Baseball League in ERA (by .47 over Geoff Brown), tied for second in wins and tied Alessandro Maestri for third in strikeouts (53). He won Pitcher of the Year honors. The Detroit Tigers signed him, with Glenn Williams and Kevin Hooker doing the scouting.

Saupold had a good first summer in the US, pitching 35 games between the West Michigan Whitecaps (2-1, 2 Sv, 2.79, 10 BB, 58 K in 58 IP) and Lakeland Flying Tigers (2-2, 3.77). He won the last game of the Florida State League finals. He then joined the Australian national team for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He got into one game, relieving Dushan Ruzic in the 5th with a 3-0 deficit against Taiwan; he allowed two hits (one a homer to Cheng-Min Peng) and got two outs before Adam Bright relieved him. He was 1-1 with a save and a 2.59 ERA for Perth that winter, but was lit up by the Canberra Cavalry in the finals of the 2012-2013 ABL, giving up 9 hits and 6 runs in 3 innings.

In the summer of '13, he had a 7-5, 3.28 record for the Erie SeaWolves. He was 4th in the Eastern League in ERA (between Matt Packer and Casey Sadler). In the 2013-2014 ABL, he was 0-1 with three saves and a 4.91 ERA for Perth; he closed out the finale this time against Canberra, finishing a 2-1, three-hit gem, following Brian Baker and Cameron Lamb. Back with Erie in 2014, he fared worse (8-11, 5.01). He tied Cody Anderson and Joely Rodriguez for third in the EL in losses, led with 92 runs allowed, led with 65 walks (3 more than Perci Garner) and led with 16 wild pitches (one more than Adrian Salcedo. The lone positive was 125 Ks, one shy of Henry Owens for the EL lead.

Saupold was 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA for Perth in 2014-2015. He split the summer between Erie (5-6, Sv, 4.01) and the Toledo Mud Hens (1-2, 4.43, 23 K in 20 1/3 IP in his AAA debut). In the winter of 2015-2016, he was 1-5 with 3 saves and a 3.52 ERA. He tied for 5th in the ABL in losses. He made the Australian national team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers and allowed one run in three innings against South Africa, replaced by Ryan Rowland-Smith with a 3-1 lead. Australia wound up winning a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

He began 2016 on an excellent note for the Toledo Mud Hens (3-1, 2.37 ERA, .89 WHIP). He was called up to the majors when Daniel Norris was sent down. He was the 32nd Australian in the majors but the first to make his debut in five years (Liam Hendriks, Shane Lindsay and Josh Spence had all debuted in 2011). In his MLB debut, he relieved Mark Lowe with a 9-3 deficit in the bottom of the 8th against the Orioles and one out. He retired Hyun-soo Kim on a grounder, allowed a single to Joey Rickard and got Manny Machado on a comebacker to end the frame.
