Team History[edit]
The Buies Creek Astros began play in the Carolina League in 2017 and were also a member of the circuit in 2018. The Astros had an agreement with the city of Fayetteville, NC to locate the team there, but a city-built stadium was not ready until the 2019 season, so for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the team played at Jim Perry Stadium at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, about 35 miles from Fayetteville. The stadium had a capacity of 1,000, with 630 seats. In 2019, they became the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
After the 2016 season, the California League and the Carolina League worked together on realignment. The California League contracted two teams, the Houston Astros' affiliate in Lancaster, and the San Francisco Giants' affiliate in Bakersfield. Both franchises moved to the Carolina League.
