Jim Perry Stadium

From BR Bullpen

Jim Perry Stadium in Buies Creek, NC, was the temporary home of the Buies Creek Astros, the Houston Astros' farm team in the Carolina League in 2017 and 2018. After that, the BC Astros splashed down in Fayetteville as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.

Opened in the 1940s as Taylor Field, it has been the home of Campbell University Fighting Camels baseball ever since.

To get their High-A players out of a windy pitcher-killing ballpark, the Texas Rangers engineered moving two teams from the California League to the Carolina Leaguein the 2017 season. They bought their affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, and the Astros helped by buying the Bakersfield Blaze. The Rangers' club moved into an existing former minor league stadium in Kinston, NC, but the Astros played at Perry while Fayetteville built Segra Stadium.

In effect, the BC-Astros/erstwhile Mavs - having won the California League crown their last season in it - won their second straight league crown in their first year in the Carolina League.

Affiliated ball first hit Fayetteville in 1909 - later including a 1950-1956 Carolina League run - and last left when the Low-A Cape Fear Crocs moved to New Jersey in 2001. Although Perry has a Buies (pronounced BOO-eez) Creek address, the Lillington post office is within sight beyond left field.
