Biographical Information

Catcher Brian Esposito was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2000 amateur draft and made his pro debut that year with the Lowell Spinners, hitting .240 in 42 games. He spent the next season with the Augusta GreenJackets but struggled at the plate, hitting just .190. He split 2002 between the GreenJackets and the Sarasota Red Sox before being converted to a relief pitcher before the 2003 season. He pitched in 13 games for Augusta and Sarasota before the Red Sox gave up on the pitching experiment and released him on June 30th. Less than a month later, he was signed by the Anaheim Angels, and he closed out the season with stints with the Provo Angels and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

He made his first major league appearance in 2007 with the St. Louis Cardinals as a ninth-inning defensive replacement at catcher on June 2nd. It was his only appearance of the season, and he would not be back in the Show for another three years.

On July 14, 2008, Esposito was one of two catchers to take the mound and get a decision in the second game of a Texas League doubleheader. He threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, from the 11th through the 13th, to get the win for the Tulsa Drillers over the Springfield Cardinals. The losing "pitcher" was Matt Pagnozzi, his fellow backstop on the 2007 Memphis Redbirds.

On September 18, 2010, Esposito logged his first Major League at bats in a game for the Houston Astros.

The year after after finishing his playing career (2012), Esposito joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as a coach for the Indianapolis Indians. He quickly earned a promotion to manager and managed the Jamestown Jammers in 2014, the West Virginia Power in 2015-2016, and the West Virginia Black Bears in 2017. In the latter year Esposito doubled as the Pirates' minor league catching coordinator. Esposito then jumped to the top rank of the minor league system and managed Indianapolis from 2018-2021, though COVID-19 wiped out the 2020 minor league season.

In 2022 Esposito moved to the San Diego Padres organization and managed their Midwest League affiliate, the Fort Wayne TinCaps. In 2023, he was the major league catching coach for the Padres.
