Berlin, Berlin

From BR Bullpen

Berlin is the capital of Germany and the country's largest city, constituting its own Land (province).

Berlin was the site of the 1936 Olympics, but after World War II, in 1945, the city was divided in four sectors, each ruled by one of the four main allied nations. The Soviet sector, "East Berlin" became the capital of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) upon its creation in 1949, while the three sectors controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom and France formed "West Berlin", an enclave of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), entirely surrounded by East German territory. Meanwhile, the Western capital was set up in Bonn. As a result, Berlin was at the center of Cold War politics, being the subject of a blockade, and then parted by the Berlin Wall, erected by the GDR in 1961 to prevent its citizens from emigrating to the West. The Wall was torn in October of 1989 as the GDR collapsed, the two Germanies were soon reunited and Berlin was once again a single city, regaining its title as the capital of a unified Germany in 1990.

Prior to being the capital of Germany, Berlin was the capital of Prussia until the formation of the German Empire in 1871.
