West Germany
(Redirected from Federal Republic of Germany)
The Federal Republic of Germany or West Germany was a country located in central Europe from 1949 to 1990. It was created in reaction to the Soviet Union-backed East Germany declaring itself an independent state. West Germany was formed out of the zones occupied by the other three allied powers - the United States, Great Britain and France - including the three sectors of Berlin which they occupied, which became "West Berlin", an enclave entirely surrounded by East Germany. The country's capital was Bonn.
Because the United States kept large army bases in West Germany until the end of the Cold War, there were a number of American children born in the country during those decades - so-called military brats - some of whom later became ballplayers.
In 1990 it reunified with East Germany to become Germany once again. Germany's official name is still the "Federal Republic of Germany".
