Biographical Information[edit]

Daniel Hinz has played in the Bundesliga.

Hinz made his Bundesliga-1 debut in 2005, hitting .375/.444/.531 in 14 games as a teenager for the Paderborn Untouchables; he was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA on the hill. He spent most of 2006-2007 in the minors, going 5 for 24 at the plate over the two years and winning his lone decision in Bundesliga-1. In 2008, Hinz was 5 for 14 with two doubles and two walks. He had a 4-1, 1.87 record. He was among the northern Bundesliga-1 leaders in ERA (5th after Benigno Ozuna, Enorbel Márquez, André Hughes and Moritz Sckaer), WHIP (1.06, 4th after Márquez, Eugen Heilmann and Hughes) and opponent average (.189, 2nd after Ozuna).

Hinz was 2-0 with a 2.64 ERA in 2009; at the plate, he was 10 for 40 with 3 doubles, a triple and a walk. He hit .242/.266/.323 in 18 games in 2010 and went 1-2 with 3 saves and a 2.56 ERA. He tied Jens Cornelsen for second in saves, one behind Nils Hartkopf. In 2011, the tall right-hander went 6-0 with two saves, a 1.81 ERA, .188 opponent average and 49 K to 7 walks in 49 2/3 IP. He also hit .306/.333/.612. He was second in the league in ERA, 7th in wins, tied for second in saves, had the lowest walk rate (about half of Heilmann), led in WHIP (.20 better than anyone else) and was second in opponent average. With Germany for the 2011 World Port Tournament, he struggled, allowing two hits, two walks and two runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 IP, tying Max Schmitz for Germany's worst ERA.

In 2012, Hinz hit .407/.479/.704 and pitched only briefly (2-0, Sv, 4 H, 5 BB, 14 K, 0 R in 12 IP). He was 6th in the league in average, 5th in home runs (6), 5th in slugging (between Dominik Wulf and Elliot Biddle) and 9th in OBP. While his numbers were good but not stellar, he still won MVP honors. He hit .412/.474/.765 in the 2012 European Cup and threw one shutout inning. He tied Kyle Botha for 8th in average and slugging and tied Botha and G.G. Sato for 8th in total bases (13). He made his debut for the German national team in a major event in the 2012 European Championship. He got into two games. He took over 1B for Ludwig Glaser when Glaser moved to 3B during a 10-2 win over Belgium and grounded out against Sim Ruts in his lone at-bat. In his other game, he replaced Sascha Brockmeyer at first in a 10-3 win over Sweden and flew out against Niklas Melin in his one at-bat.

The Berlin native slumped after his MVP year, hitting .298/.344/.421 in only 14 games in 2013 and allowing hits to both batters he pitched to. In 2014, he batted .247/.340/.395 and allowed 7 runs (4 earned( in two innings. He rebounded in 2015 to hit .293/.323/.511 with 23 RBI in 24 games and going 1-1 with a save and a 3.60 ERA. He tied Schmitz for fourth in the league in home runs (4), was 5th in RBI (between Wulf and Florian Götze), tied Charlie Calamia for 4th in doubles (8) and was 8th in slugging (between Schmitz and Mike Perrone).

After his brief 2012 stint with the German national team, Hinz was back with them for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers early in 2016. Oddly, while he had not pitched significantly for several years, he was used as a hurler in his only game. He relieved Daniel Thieben in the bottom of the 8th with a 11-2 deficit, the bases loaded and no outs against the Czech Republic. He served up a grand slam to Martin Červenka then got Přemek Chroust and Petr Zýma. Jakub Hajtmar singled, but Adam Hajtmar grounded back to the mound to end the inning. The game ended after 8 due to the mercy rule.
