Biographical Information[edit]
Ayumu Ishikawa has won Rookie of the Year honors in Japan.
Ishikawa was undrafted out of college then signed with Tokyo Gas in the industrial leagues. He played for the Japanese squad that won the 2013 East Asian Games. The Chiba Lotte Marines and Yomiuri Giants both claimed him in the first round of the 2013 NPB draft, with Chiba Lotte winning the lottery for his rights. Only Yuki Matsui and Daichi Osera had been selected by more teams.
As a rookie, he lived up to those first-round hopes, going 10-8 with a 3.43 ERA in 2014. His first strikeout was against Nobuhiro Matsuda. He got his first hit off Tomoyuki Sugano in an interleague game. He finished 8th in the Pacific League in ERA (between Brandon Dickson and Kazuhisa Makita) and tied Tadashi Settsu for 8th in wins. For his efforts, he won the 2014 Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award with 155 of 243 votes; Tomomi Takahashi finished second with 46 votes.
