Biographical Information[edit]

Tomomi Takahashi has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.

Takahashi was drafted by the Seibu Lions in the fourth round of the 2012 NPB draft, and he soon joined the bullpen as a rookie.[1] He had a 3.38 ERA in 24 appearances in 2013, and also notched 10 holds. Takahashi became one of the most dominant relievers in 2014, as he collected 29 holds and 13 saves in 63 appearances with a 2.01 ERA. He ranked 4th in the Pacific League in appearances (4 behind Tatsuya Sato) and 4th in saves (11 behind Yoshihisa Hirano). He represented Japan in the 2014 Nichi-Bei Series, and pitched a shutout inning in both Game 2 and Game 5. He got 46 votes for the 2014 Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award, finishing second behind Ayumu Ishikawa's 155 votes. [2]

The Shizuoka native extended his solid pitching in 2015, and he set the NPB record when he notched a save in all first four games of a season. Takahashi was also selected into the 2015 NPB All-Star Games, and replaced Shota Takeda in the 8th inning of Game 2 with a 7-3 deficit against the Central League. He retired Jose Lopez and struck out Takayuki Kajitani, but then allowed a solo homer to Ryosuke Hirata and a single to Takashi Toritani. He finally forced Tsubasa Aizawa to ground out to end the inning.[3] Takahashi recorded a 2.92 ERA in 62 games in this season, ranking 6th in appearances (10 behind Tatsushi Masuda) and 5th in saves (19 behind Dennis Sarfate). However, this season was the last productive season for this talented reliever. He fractured his right fibula and missed the last month of the 2015 season, then underwent Tommy John surgery so he missed nearly the entire 2016 and 2017 seasons. Takahashi never recovered from surgery, so he announced his retirement after the 2020 season.[4]

Overall, Takahashi was 6-5 with a 2.74 ERA, collected 52 saves and 40 holds, struck out 167 and pitched 151 innings in 6 years in NPB.
