Biographical Information[edit]

Daichi Osera was a first-round pick in the 2013 NPB draft and Rookie of the Year the next season.

Osera was 38-5 with a 1.07 ERA in college and won a MVP. He pitched for the Japanese national team that won the 2012 Asian Championship, striking out 11 in 5 shutout innings. He teamed with Hayato Arakaki and Ryo Akiyoshi in a one-hitter of Pakistan. The Yakult Swallows, Hanshin Tigers and Hiroshima Carp all picked Osera for the first round of the 2013 NPB draft; the lottery went Hiroshima's way. Only Yuki Matsui was picked by more teams that year.

The right-hander was 10-8 with a 4.05 ERA in 2014. He tied Minoru Iwata for 9th in the Central League with 116 strikeouts and tied for 8th in wins (even with Masanori Ishikawa, Yudai Ono and Toshiya Sugiuchi). He won the 2014 Central League Rookie of the Year Award handily, with 217 of 267 votes; Katsuki Matayoshi was second at 26.

His repertoire consists of a fastball (peak time 95 mph), cutter, slider, curveball and change-up.
