Biographical Information[edit]
Argenis Diaz made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010.
Diaz was signed by Boston Red Sox' scouts German Robles and Miguel Garcia in 2003. He made his pro debut with the 2004 VSL Red Sox, hitting .236 with 12 doubles. He batted .266/.390/.365 as the shortstop for the 2005 VSL Red Sox/Padres. In 2006, he came stateside with the GCL Red Sox and hit .263/.300/.293. Baseball America named him the best defensive infielder in Boston's farm system.
The lightweight Venezuelan hit .279/.342/.380 for the 2007 Greenville Drive. He led South Atlantic League shortstops with a .952 fielding percentage and was named the best defensive infielder among Red Sox farmhands again. He spent the winter with the Honolulu Sharks, batting .358 with a .421 OBP. He led the Hawaii Winter League in OBP and was second to Brandon Snyder in average. His 38 hits were second to Mat Gamel. Baseball America named him the #13 prospect in the circuit, right behind Chris Valaika.
In 2008, Diaz split time between the Lancaster JetHawks (.281/.330/.363) and the Portland Sea Dogs (.288/.336/.417). He then played for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the Venezuelan Winter League. Baseball America once more named him the best defensive infielder among Boston minor leaguers.
Argenis began 2009 back with Portland and had a batting line of .253/.309/.310 after 76 games. He was then traded with Hunter Strickland to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Adam LaRoche. He hit only .233/.273/.240 in 43 games for the Indianapolis Indians after the deal.
Diaz began 2010 with Indianapolis, hitting .231/.286/.231 in his first 11 games. He was then called up to the majors with Pirate infielders Andy LaRoche and Bobby Crosby battling back problems. He debuted in The Show on April 21 as a pinch-hitter for Jack Taschner, grounding out.
Diaz was scheduled to become a coach with Indianapolis in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19.
