Biographical Information[edit]

Anthony Shawler pitched as high as AA.

Shawler hit .418 as a high school senior and threw a no-hitter. The Washington Nationals took him in the 45th round of the 2005 amateur draft, one pick before Ulrich Snijders. He went on to college; as a freshman, he was 2-0 with two saves and a 3.42 ERA and hit .236 as a OF-3B. His sophomore year, 2007, he was excellent at 11-2, 2.20 with 130 K and a .224 opponent average in 114 2/3 IP; he also batted .305/.389/.515 with 5 triples,38 runs and 35 RBI in 49 games. He was among the Colonial Athletic Association leaders in triples (3rd), ERA (1st), WHIP (1st), wins (1st), complete games (8, 1st), shutouts (3, 1st), innings (1st), strikeouts (1st, 21 more than runner-up Daniel Hudson). He and Hudson were named the All-CAA pitchers. He tied a school record with 22 consecutive shutout innings. He was also picked as a first-team Collegiate Baseball All-American, joining David Price, Bryan Henry, Jacob Thompson, Preston Guilmet, Adam Mills and Casey Weathers. The American Baseball Coaches Association picked him second-team as they went with five hurlers (Price, Henry, Mills, Thompson and Weathers) and Baseball America selected him as third-team.

As a junior, the Virginian produced at a .314/.410/.532 clip with 7 home runs and 40 RBI in 47 games; he fell to 5-3, 5.35 on the mound with a WHIP of 1.48 though he did fan 95 in 75 2/3 innings. He tied Bradley Holt for second in the CAA in whiffs, 12 behind Hudson. The Detroit Tigers, behind scout Bill Buck, chose him in the 9th round of the 2008 amateur draft, one round after Andy Dirks and one round before Robbie Weinhardt. On June 30, he relieved Dave Stokes with a 1-0 deficit in the 6th despite a no-hitter; Shawler tossed a perfect 6th then Ben Guez hit a two-run double in the 7th to put the Oneonta Tigers ahead. Tyler Stohr tossed a no-hit 7th to complete the three-man 7-inning no-hitter against the Lowell Spinners. For the year, he went 2-3 with 3 saves and a 1.76 ERA in 22 games, allowing a .180 average and striking out 54 in 51 innings. Had he qualified, he would have beaten out Holt for the New York-Penn League ERA lead. He was named Oneonta's Pitcher of the Year.

With the 2009 West Michigan Whitecaps, Shawler turned in a 7-5, 3.76 record with one save in 37 starts (8 starts). He split 2010 between the Lakeland Flying Tigers (1-0, 2 Sv, 0.96 in 11 G) and Erie SeaWolves (5-4, 4.75 in 28 G). Overall, he had gone 15-12 with 6 saves and a 3.57 ERA in 98 minor league games (21 starts). In 279 2/3 innings, he had allowed 259 hits and 72 walks while striking out 250.
