Biographical Information[edit]

Ben Guez has played for several years in AAA.

Amateur Career[edit]

Guez hit .228/.294/.290 as a college freshman and .270/.313/.423 as a sophomore. With the Bourne Braves in 2007, he batted .282/.382/.410 as one of the top offensive performers on his Cape Cod League club. He exploded as a junior, producing at a .390/.470/.662 rate; in 57 games, he scored 75 runs, drove in 51, hit 13 home runs and stole 15 bases in 21 tries. He was second in the Colonial Athletic Association in runs and made All-Association in the outfield. The Detroit Tigers, behind the advice of scout Bill Buck, took him in the 19th round of the 2008 amateur draft.

Minor Leagues[edit]

In his pro debut with the Oneonta Yankees, Guez batted just .223/.325/.367 though he did steal 16 bases in 21 tries and had 8 outfield assists (tied for the New York-Penn League lead). He improved in 2009 with the West Michigan Whitecaps at .275/.320/.483 with 34 doubles. He fielded .992 and had 11 assists. He tied Rebel Ridling and Alfredo Silverio for 6th in the Midwest League in doubles. In 2010, he climbed up the ladder, playing for the Lakeland Flying Tigers (.207/.324/.322 in 28 G), Erie SeaWolves (10 for 28, 3 2B, 3 BB) and Toledo Mud Hens (.251/.339/.439 in 68 G). That winter, he hit .228/.290/.456 for the Surprise Rafters of the Arizona Fall League.

Guez split 2011 between Erie (.299/.372/.504 in 38 G) and Toledo (.278/.333/.411). Overall, he had 31 doubles and 8 triples, while stealing only 12 bases in 27 tries. He led Tigers farmhands in times caught stealing, was 6th in doubles and tied Audy Ciriaco for the most three-baggers. In winter ball, he hit .273/.295/.467 in 13 games for the Tomateros de Culiacán.

In '12, Ben repeated the Erie/Toledo shuffle, hitting .308/.481/.474 with 22 runs in 26 games at AA and .284/.379/.455 in 82 games at AAA, fielding .990 for the year. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he was the Israeli national team's starting center fielder and leadoff batter. He went 2 for 12 with a double, two runs, two walks and a RBI. He scored Israel's first run in their 4-2 win over Spain, reaching on an error before a Nate Freiman homer, but then made an error of his own to give Spain a run back. In the rematch, a 9-7 loss that cost Israel a spot in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Guez came up big in the 8th. Down 7-6, he doubled off Remigio Leal and came around to score the tying run, but his team lost in extra innings.
