Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Alex Taveras played briefly in the majors, first appearing for the Houston Astros in 1976, for whom he hit .217 in 14 games. After spending the next few seasons in the minors, he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers for parts of the 1982 and 1983 seasons, for a total of 21 games. Used almost solely as a defensive replacement by the Dodgers, he only got 7 at-bats in those games, with one hit. Overall, his career in the United States lasted from 1974 to 1985. He was in AAA for at least part of every season from 1976 to 1985, except for 1980 which he spent entirely with the AA San Antonio Missions. He then managed a number of seasons in the affiliated minors and in the Mexican League.

He managed the Dominican Republic national team in the 2001 Baseball World Cup. He had previously played for the Dominicans in the 1973 Amateur World Series and won Silver in the 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games. In the 1974 Games, he hit .350/.391/.425 with 6 runs and 5 RBI in 10 games. His .929 fielding percentage was the lowest among qualifying second basemen in the Games, but he was 8th in average (between Sergio de la Hoz and Rafael Vega).
