History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1981 New York Yankees played the 79th season in team history. They finished in first place in the American League Eastern Division for the first half of the strike-shortened season with a 34-22 record, but finished sixth in the second half with a 25-26 record, for an overall record of 59-48. The season was suspended for 50 days due to the infamous 1981 players strike and the league chose as its playoff teams the teams that finished in first place in their division in the first and second halves of the season, respectively.
In the ALDS, which were necessitated by the split-season format, the Yankees beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 3 games to 2. In the ALCS, the Yankees swept the Oakland Athletics; Graig Nettles was named the Most Valuable Player of the Series. However, the Yankees lost in the World Series in 6 games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York was managed by Gene Michael and Bob Lemon. The Yankees played at Yankee Stadium.
