From BR Bullpen

The 1981 Major League Baseball season was shortened by a strike. As a result, teams generally played 102-110 games. Playoffs featured the winners of each half season (before and after the strike) in each division facing each other in the first round, creating an extra tier to the playoffs, the Division Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series. The Cincinnati Reds had the best record in baseball but failed to qualify for the postseason by not leading the NL West in either half.
