1947 East-West Game - First Game (Negro League)

The first 1947 East-West Game was held at Comiskey Park on July 27, 1947. The home team won for the 7th straight East-West Game. The attendance was 48,112 and Chicago mayor Martin Kennelly threw out the first pitch. The East's offensive woes continued - after being held to four hits and one run in the last game, they managed just two runs and three hits today in a 5-2 defeat.

The West got out of the gate quickly. Herb Souell hit a one-out triple off Max Manning. After Sam Jethroe was retired, Piper Davis doubled off the scoreboard to make it 1-0. After Quincy Trouppe walked, Jose Colas singled in front of Cuban countrymate Claro Duany for a 2-0 edge. In the second, the East got within a run. Dan Bankhead plunked Monte Irvin, who made his way to third before Duany hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The West added insurance in the third, scoring twice more off Manning and knocking him from the box. Each team got one run in the 8th to finish the scoring. The game featured the oldest player to appear in an East-West Game when East manager Biz Mackey pinch-hit on his 50th birthday and was given an intentional walk by Chet Brewer.

The only East hits came from pitcher Manning (1 for 2), backup catcher Louis Louden (1 for 1, RBI) and backup outfielder Luis Márquez (1 for 1, 2B, R). Luis Tiant Sr. (2 2/3 IP) and Henry Miller (2 IP) each tossed scoreless ball. Lowlights included Manning (4 R, 5 H, 2 BB in 2 1/3 IP), Henry Kimbro (0 for 4) and Johnny Washington (0 for 4).

Western stars included Goose Tatum (2 for 4, R), Davis (2 for 3, BB, SB, R), Colas (2 for 4, 2 RBI), Buddy Armour (2 for 4, 2 2B) and Trouppe (1 for 2, 3B, BB, R, RBI) at the plate and Gentry Jessup (3 hitless, scoreless innings) on the mound. Artie Wilson went 0 for 4 only two days before he would be the hitting star of the second 1947 East-West Game.
