History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1944 Brooklyn Dodgers had their Spring Training in Bear Mountain, NY because travel was limited due to World War II.
The team featured 16-year-old shortstop Tommy Brown and 48-year-old pinch hitter Babe Herman.
Dixie Walker (#11), "the Peoples Cherce" was the right fielder. Goody Rosen, #35, from Canada, was the center fielder. One of the first Puerto Rican players, Luis Olmo, was the left fielder.
The infield had Howie Schultz at first base, Eddie (the violin) Basinski at second, Brown at short, and Frenchy Bordagaray at third base. The catcher was Clyde Sukeforth, later a coach. Pitchers included Hal Gregg, Art Herring, Curt Davis, Ed Head and Hugh Casey (who later committed suicide).
Leo Durocher was the manager.
They set a franchise record by losing 14 consecutive games from June 28-July 16. No Dodgers team since that year has had a losing streak longer than 11 games. They might not have won many games, but they were loved.
