1936 East-West Game (Negro League)
The first blowout in the history of the East-West Game, the 1936 East-West Game saw the East dominate their Western rivals. The East's lone problem was defense, as their five errors allowed the West to score their only two runs. Oddly, only four teams had players represented - the East had members of the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Washington Elite Giants while the West had players from the Kansas City Monarchs and Chicago American Giants. The game was held on August 23.
The East was led by CF Cool Papa Bell (3 for 3, 2B, R, RBI, SB), C Biz Mackey (2 for 2, 2B, 2 RBI), C Josh Gibson (2 for 3, 2 R, RBI, SB) and RF Zolley Wright (1 for 1, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) on offense. Leroy Matlock pitched three scoreless innings for the win. Bill Byrd fanned 4 in 3 innings and allowed one unearned run, while Satchel Paige also allowed one unearned score in three frames. On defense, 3B Judy Johnson made a great stop on the first play of the game, robbing West CF Eddie Dwight. The only East player to have a bad day was SS Chester Williams (0 for 4, RBI, error).
For the West, Andy Cooper threw a scoreless inning, 3B Alec Radcliffe was 3 for 4 with a run and 2B Pat Patterson went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI. 2B-SS Newt Allen's 0 for 5 stood out as the lighest offensive threat while all pitchers except Cooper were rocked - Sug Cornelius (6 H, 2 R in 3 IP, the loss), Floyd Kranson (4 runs in 2 IP) and Ted Trent (4 runs in 3 IP).
Top vote-getters were Paige (18,275), Matlock (11,106) and Trent (10,697). Among position players, light-hitting catcher Subby Byas (10,177) surprisingly polled first, followed by UT Sammy Bankhead (10,085) and Harry Else (8,746).
