Introduction[edit]

The 1927 Colored World Series was the last of four post-season series between the champions of the Negro National League and the Eastern Colored League. The series had not caught on with fans or with the media, and the declining fortunes of the ECL precluded any further meetings.

As with the three previous series, this was a best of nine contest, and was a rematch of the respective 1926 champions, the Chicago American Giants and the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants. Chicago won the series five games to three, with one tie. They won the first four games and then lost three and tied one before closing out the series.

The Teams[edit]

Chicago American Giants[edit]

Won first half of NNL split season, beat Birmingham Black Barons, second half winners, four games to none, winning by scores of 5-0, 10-5, 6-4, and 6-2.

Atlantic City Bacharach Giants[edit]

Won both halves of ECL split season, though it took a decision by the ECL president disallowing a forfeit win by runner-up Harrisbug to avoid a playoff.

The Games[edit]

The series format was the same as the previous year's, four games played at one team's home park and the remainder at the other. The 1926 series had started at the eastern champion's park, so this year started in the western team's home park.

With a drizzle falling throughout the game and heavier rain constantly threatening, Luther Farrell pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against his old team to give the Bacharachs their first win. Allowing an unearned run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, he finished strongly, retiring the last seven men he faced. The home plate umpire called the game in the middle of the seventh on account of darkness, and many Chicago players rushed to the plate to protest, but to no avail.

Heavy rains began to fall shortly after the game ended, and prevented play on Sunday.
