History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1920 Brooklyn Robins handily beat the 1920 New York Giants by seven games to win the 1920 National League pennant. The Giants were the powerhouse team of the time, finishing first in 1917 and from 1921-24, and finishing second in years when they didn't finish first.
The stars of the Robins in 1920 were Zack Wheat, who led the team in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, and Hy Myers, who led the team in doubles, triples, and RBI. On the pitching staff, Burleigh Grimes had 22 victories while Jeff Pfeffer went 16-9. Everyone except George Mohart had a winning record, and Mohart did his part by posting an ERA of 1.77.
The team had the best ERA in the league, along with the second-best batting average and the most triples.
All of the starting position players were at least 30 years old except Pete Kilduff.
Manager Wilbert Robinson managed the team from 1914-31, winning the pennant in 1916 and 1920. Wheat and Pfeffer were also stars on his 1916 team.
Brooklyn would not win the pennant again until 1941. In 1921, the year after the 1920 pennant, the team slipped to fifth place, and in the years 1921-39 Brooklyn would finish as high as third only twice - in 1924, when the team was second, and in 1932, when the team was third.
