History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1889 White Stockings had a notable outfield of Jimmy Ryan, George Van Haltren, and Hugh Duffy. Duffy is in the Hall of Fame, and while Ryan and Van Haltren are not, there are decent arguments why they should be.

The 1889 National League, however, was dominated by the New York Giants, who had a ton of Hall of Famers on the team along with some other top players.

Prior to the season, owner Al Spalding took the team on a world tour to promote the game of baseball around the world. Stops included playing games at the foot of the Pyramids in Egypt, in Rome where an attempt to play a game inside the Colosseum was turned down by authorities, in Paris which was celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution, and in London, England, where a game was played at Kennington Oval cricket ground with the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, in attendance
