Biographical Information

Yorbis Borroto has played shortstop for Ciego de Ávila. He had hit .274 and slugged .376 in six seasons through 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, Borroto batted .318/.459/.460 with 63 walks in 86 games; he fielded .971. He was only among the league's top 10 in one category, assists (325), but he did win a Gold Glove at shortstop.

He was put on Cuba's roster for the 2009 World Port Tournament and hit .348/.484/.435 with 8 runs and 7 walks in 10 games, making one error as Cuba's starting shortstop. He scored the go-ahead run off Michiel van Kampen in the finale to help Cuba to the title. He was 6th in the event in average, 10th in slugging, second in OBP (behind Adonis García), 4th in walks and tied for second in runs (even with Raily Legito and Eriel Sánchez, behind Ariel Borrero).

He hit .340/.440/.504 in 2009-2010 and fielded .979 at short. He was third in the Serie Nacional with 338 assists. He made his debut for the Cuban national team in the 2010 Intercontinental Cup, hitting .438/.526/.563 with five runs in six games. In the Gold Medal game over the Dutch national team, he came up big from the #9 spot in the order. His two-run double off Rob Cordemans drove in José Dariel Abreu and Ariel Pestano to break a scoreless tie; Cuba wound up with a 4-1 win. He lost out the tourney All-Star honors at short to future big leaguer Didi Gregorius.

In the 2010 World University Championship, he was named the All-Star shortstop as Cuba won it all. He hit .250/.323/.286 with 5 runs and 4 RBI in 10 games in the 2010 Pan American Games Qualifying Tournament while playing error-free ball as Cuba's main shortstop. He was named as the tournament's All-Star shortstop, In 2010-2011, he produced at a .343/.469/.512 clip with 65 runs in 85 games, fielding .979 at short. He tied Yoennis Southerán for 9th in the league with 61 walks.

Borroto was left off Cuba's squad for the 2011 Baseball World Cup and 2011 Pan American Games, bypassed in favor of younger Erisbel Arruebarrena. He slumped to .278/.416/.399 for Ciego de Ávila in 2011-2012. In the finals, though, he came up big when it mattered most. He scored the 11-inning game-winning run in the last game (driven in by Ricardo Bordón) to give the team its first Serie Nacional title.

The Ciro Redondo native slumped further in 2012-2013 (.250/.359/.322). He opened 2013-2014 hitting .255/.344/.377 for Ciego de Ávila in the first half; when they did not qualify for the second half, he joined Villa Clara and hit .297/.379/.399. He batted .266/.385/.380 in 2014-2015 and was second in the league with 319 assists, trailing only Alfredo Rodríguez.

With Arrubarruena having defected, Borroto returned to the national team and a starting role in the 2015 Pan American Games. He did well, batting .320/.469/.560 with 6 walks, 5 runs and 5 RBI in 8 games while handling 43 chances error-free for the Bronze Medalists. He hit a 8th-inning two-run game-winning homer off Gerardo Juárez to prevent an upset loss to Nicaragua and then came up even bigger in the Bronze Medal game. With Cuba down 6-3 in the bottom of the 9th against Puerto Rico, he tied it with a three-run jack off Raúl Rivera and Cuba won 7-6 when José Adolis García also went yard. He tied for 8th in the event in homers but both of his had come at crucial times. Borroto was 0 for 7 in the 2015 Premier 12, backing up Yordan Manduley.
