Biographical Information

Relief pitcher Yonata Ortega began his professional career in 2005.

Ortega was signed to the Arizona Diamondbacks by scout Junior Noboa. Playing for the DSL Diamondbacks in 2005, he went 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 8 games (2 starts). With the same club in 2006, he went 2-7 with a 3.43 ERA in 14 games (11 starts). In 2007, he pitched for the Missoula Osprey, going 0-2 with a save and a 6.40 ERA in 19 relief appearances. He did not play in 2008 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. In 2009, Ortega pitched for the South Bend Silver Hawks, going 0-2 with a save and a 6.87 ERA in 30 relief appearances. He split 2010 between the Silver Hawks and Visalia Rawhide, going a combined 4-4 with 33 saves and a 3.48 ERA in 48 relief appearances. Despite spending only part of the season there, he led the Midwest League with 22 saves. He was named the league's All-Star right-handed reliever. In 2011, he pitched for the RawHide and Mobile BayBears, going 4-1 with 11 saves and a 4.11 ERA in 48 games. In 57 innings, he had 76 Ks. With the BayBears again in 2012, Ortega was 2-2 with a 6.88 ERA in 42 appearances. After not pitching during the regular season in 2013, Ortega had a 10.12 ERA in three relief appearances for the Delfines de Ciudad del Carmen in 2014. In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he allowed two runs (one earned) in three innings for the Bronze Medalists.

He briefly returned to pro ball in the 2017-18 winter league season, posting a 9.00 ERA in a single game for the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Winter League.

Overall, Ortega went 12-18 with a 4.94 ERA in 201 games (11 starts) in the minor leagues.
