Biographical Information

Yen-Cheng Chen played in the CPBL for 8 years.

Chen represented Taiwan in the 1983 World Junior Championship. The Wei Chuan Dragons signed him when they were founded, and Chen hit .314/.347/.444 in his rookie year. He was also selected into the 1990 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was 1-for-2. In the 1990 Taiwan Series, Chen had a 1-for-7 record and he won his first Taiwan Series title as the Dragons beat the Mercuries Tigers in 6 games. He slumped to .242/.301/.387 in 1991, and he was 0-for-5 in the 1991 CPBL All-Star Games. He struggled again in the 1991 Taiwan Series, having a 1-for-9 record and the Dragons lost to the Uni-President Lions. He was then traded with I-Tseng Lin to the Brother Elephants for Ming-Tsu Lu.

Since the Elephants already had star catcher I-Chung Hung, Chen was moved to third base. He hit .267/.326/.458 with 10 dingers and a league-leading 3 triples in 1992, and he was 8th in RBI (24 behind Francisco Laureano). He attended the 1992 CPBL All-Star Games, and he was 3-for-7 with a RBI. Chen recorded a .260/.338/.388 batting line in 1993, and he was selected into the All-Star Game for the fourth consecutive year; he was 0-for-2. Chen hit .300/.364/.550 in the 1993 Taiwan Series, and he won another title as the Brothers beat the Lions in 6 games.

The Hsinchu native had a .260/.315/.400 batting line in 1994, then he slumped to .220/.245/.278 in 1995. The Brothers traded him to the Sinon Bulls for 1.5 million NT dollars after the 1996 season, but Chen struggled again. He hit .218/.278/.269 in 1996 before the Bulls released him, and the China Times Eagles picked him up. Chen hit .180/.253/.202 in 1997, and he had a .250/.318/.250 batting line in the 1997 Taiwan Series; the Eagles lost to the Dragons in 6 games. Chen's professional career ended after the Eagles expelled in 1997. He started to coach Chung Hua University in 2013.

Overall, Chen hit .253/.307/.372 with 404 hits, 74 doubles and 34 homers in 8 seasons in the CPBL.
