Yamasá, Monte Plata
(Redirected from Yamasá)
Yamasá is located in Monte Plata province in central Dominican Republic, 30 miles north of the capital, Santo Domingo.
On January 11, 1948 a DC6 plane carrying the Santiago Baseball Club crashed in a nearby village known as Rio Verde de Yamasá, while returning from a doubleheader in Barahona, killing all 38 occupants on board, including Dominican baseball legend Pedro Báez, who was the team's manager. It is still considered the biggest tragedy in Dominican sports history and was the subject of a feature film, La Tragedia de Río Verde, released on the 70th anniversary of the crash, January 11, 2018.
