Biographical Information[edit]
Aquiles Martínez was a top Dominican infielder of the 1940s; his brother Horacio Martínez was one of the first Dominicans in the Negro Leagues.
A second baseman, he was noted for his double play work with Papito Vargas. He was with the Dominicans for the 1941 Amateur World Series, 1942 Amateur World Series (Silver Medal), 1943 Amateur World Series (Bronze), 1944 Amateur World Series and 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games (Silver Medal). He died in the 1948 plane crash that killed numerous other Dominican stars, all members of Santiago BBC at the time. He was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
