Biographical Information[edit]
Camilo Doval reached the majors with the San Francisco Giants early in the 2021 season after having been signed as an international amateur free agent in October of 2015. He had an excellent first season in the majors, going 5-1, 3.00 with 3 saves in 29 appearances out of the bullpen. He also struck out 37 batters in 27 innings. That was the year when the Giants set a franchise record for wins with 107, and by the time the epic Division Series match-up with the Los Angeles Dodgers took place, he was a key member of the bullpen. He pitched three times in that closely-fought series. He saved his team's 1-0 win n Game 3 on October 11th by retiring all six batters he faced in order, but in the decisive Game 5 on October 14th, he gave up the run that made the difference in the 9th inning. The score was 1-1 when he replaced Tyler Rogers wioth 2 on and 2 out in the top of the 8th, and he got Trea Turner to fly out to end the inning, but in the 9th, he hit Justin Turner with a pitch with one out, then gave up back-to-back singles to Gavin Lux and Cody Bellinger before Kevin Gausman replaced him and manage to get out of the jam, but too late, as the Giants failed to score against Max Scherzer in the bottom of the inning.
In 2022, Doval became the Giants' closer, saving 27 games while going 6-6, 2.53 in 68 outings. He struck out 80 batters in 67 2/3 innings. He followed that with a very similar season in 2023, which earned him an appearance in the All-Star Game. He again finished at 6-6, this time in 69 games and 67 2/3 innings. He led the National League in saves with 39 and games finished with 60 and struck out 87. However, his numbers took a downturn in 2024, as he went 5-3 and saved 23 games, but his ERA ballooned to 4.88. He still struck out plenty of batters - 78 in 59 innings - but he also issued 39 walks and 54 hits, both figures being the highest or tied for the highest of his career. He was moved out of the closer's role in August in favor of Ryan Walker.
