Biographical Information[edit]
Ramon Garcia has pitched as high as AAA.
Garcia was signed by the Detroit Tigers in May 2004; the scout was Ramon Pena. He debuted that summer with the DSL Tigers, going 9-3 with a 2.49 ERA, striking out 96 and walking 14 in 83 innings. He tied for third in the Dominican Summer League in wins, trailing Francisco Mateo and Yohan Pino. Coming to the US with the 2005 GCL Tigers, he posted a 5-3, 3.65 record. He walked 14 in 56 2/3 innings. He tied for fourth in the Gulf Coast League in wins and was 4th in baserunners per 9 innings (10.96).
Garcia started 2006 strong again with the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7-2, 1.92. He had allowed just a .194 average and 11 walks in 75 innings before a left shoulder strain cut his season short. Baseball America said he had the best control in the Midwest League. Had he qualified, he would have led the MWL in ERA. He did tie Johnny Cueto for the league lead in shutouts. Returning from injury in 2007, he was not nearly as sharp with the Whitecaps (0-1, 5.52) and Lakeland Flying Tigers (0-1, 8 H, 7 R in 2 1/3 IP), again missing significant time.
In 2008, Garcia was somewhat sharper with West Michigan (4-3, 2.81, 5 BB In 48 IP) and Lakeland (4-4, Sv, 4.57). He struggled as a swingman for the 2009 Erie SeaWolves (4-4, 2 Sv, 6.14, .328 opponent average). In 2010, he bounced between Lakeland (2-0, 1.26 in 8 G), Erie (0-5, Sv, 5.25 in 27 G, .303 opponent average) and the Toledo Mud Hens (1-0, 6 H, 3 R in 3 IP). Through that season, his career mark was 36-26, 4.06 in 153 games with 113 walks in 545 2/3 innings.
The southpaw split 2011 between Erie (3-3, 4.57 in 23 G) and Toledo (1-3, 3.92 in 10 G). He allowed 3 runs (1 earned) in 11 innings that winter for the Leones del Escogido, going 1-1. He remained with Escogido for the 2012 Caribbean Series.
On January 14, 2014, pitching for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican League, Garcia combined with three other pitchers (Jon Leicester, Armando Rodriguez and Fernando Rodney) to toss a 6-0 no-hitter against Tigres del Licey. The win secured a place for his team in the finals of the league championship tournament. He was credited with the win, as the game was still scoreless when starter Leicester left after five innings.
