Biographical Information[edit]
Pedro Báez was the elder of the three Báez brothers who were early stars of Dominican baseball; he got the nickname Grillo A due to his being the oldest of the "Grillos". The other brothers were Andrés Julio Báez and Luis Báez. Pedro began playing for the Tigres del Licey in 1924 and was a regular third baseman from 1929 on. He played for the Dominican national team that won Silver in the 1942 Amateur World Series and Bronze in the 1943 Amateur World Series, alongside his brothers. In 1948, he was managing Santiago BBC when their plane crashed, killing all of those aboard. The tragedy is considered the most serious in Dominican sports history and is regularly commemorated to this day, including in a feature film released in 2018.
