Winston Márquez peaked at A ball.
Márquez signed with the Minnesota Twins in September 2003. He made his pro debut with the 2004 DSL Twins, going 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. He struck out 18 in 15 innings but walked 17. The next year, he allowed one run in 9 2/3 IP for the DSL Twins but walked seven. Demoted to the VSL Twins/Blue Jays in 2006, he posted a 1-5, 4.82 record with 68 K and 45 BB in 65 1/3 IP. He was second in the Venezuelan Summer League in walks, 8th in strikeouts and first in wild pitches (22).
Márquez came stateside in 2007, appearing for the GCL Twins (3-3, 3.04, .228 opponent average, 30 BB in 47 1/3 IP) and Fort Myers Miracle (3 R in 1 IP). He allowed three hits in his only inning for the Cardenales de Lara, his debut in the Venezuelan Winter League. He missed all of 2008 after left knee surgery. In '09, he returned with the Elizabethton Twins (1-0, 3.27, 15 K, 7 BB in 11 IP) and Beloit Snappers (0-2, 5.21, 10 BB, 30 K in 19 IP). In the AAA phase of the 2009 Rule 5 draft, he was picked by the Texas Rangers, but they released him during spring training in 2010. In the winter of 2009-2010, he had a 0-2, 7.36 record for Lara, with 18 walks in 22 innings.
Winston was 0-1 with 5 runs in 7 innings for the Tijuana Cimarrones in the summer of 2010 to bring his minor league record to 6-13.
For 2011, the left-hander signed with Spain's CB Sant Boi club. He was 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in the 2011 European Cup, with 14 walks and 12 strikeouts in 9 2/3 IP. He tied Ben Grover and Jesus Matos for the most Ks in the Amsterdam phase of the Cup, but also led in walks (3 more than Nick Lobanov) and balks (2). He lost to Unipol Bologna in a rout but beat the North Stars Moscow.
